A Brief Guide To Accommodation in Brittany
The following information has been provided in response to several requests regarding accommodation for family holidays in Brittany. There is a huge amount of information on the web and some of this can seem a bit bewildering at first, especially the French language websites. So, once you have decided on the area that you and your family wish to visit what about the accommodation options?
When to Book?
A good time of year to book (when there is loads of choice) is before Christmas but this of course means that you must be organised enough to be thinking at least 6 months in advance! Don't worry there is still reasonable choice at other times of the year too.
What are the options?
Most UK holidaymakers take their car to Brittany and for family holidays there are two suitable accommodation options:
i) Rent a Gite
A holiday cottage/house. You will need to book your own ferry crossings so make sure you have checked prices and availability of these before you commit yourself to a gite. Gites are often operated on a Saturday to Saturday basis and they come in every conceiveable shape and size. Some gites may also have a swimming pool (or shared use of a pool). Gites in the popular tourist areas, and those close to good beaches, are more expensive. You can often find a suitable gite, off the beaten track, at a very competitive price so be prepared to shop around. A google search along the lines of "Brittany gites" will provide you with plenty of choice.
ii) A Family Holiday package

Plenty of companies specialise in this type of holiday and ferry crossings are normally included in the package. The normal sort of arrangement is to have a fully equipped tent or a mobile home/caravan ready for you on arrival at the campsite. These holidays are ideal for families as you will have full use of all campsite facilities (swimming pools, gym, shops, restaurants etc) and there are normally "kids clubs" run each morning and afternoon for 2 or 3 hours when the parents can relax, unwind and perhaps even go bouldering! Evening baby sitting services are often available too. The drawback (especially during peak season) can be the price of these holidays. However, cheaper deals at the start and end of the holiday season are often available and it is always worth having a look to see exactly what is on offer. A google search "family holidays in brittany" should do the trick.
Finally....If you have any further recommendations or suggestions to make, please get in touch. Happy holidays!
